From time-to-time we receive calls from clients asking if there are alternatives to our mail-in spore testing service. Most inquiries are typically generated by one of two questions:
(1) Is there a way to get faster spore test results?
This question usually comes from an office that has recently failed a spore test. The result for a mailed-in spore test can take a number of days to report back to the office based on the various delivery times of the postal service. With spore tests coming in from all over the United States, it’s possible for a test result to take as many as 7 days. If the office follows up with another test to recheck their sterilizer’s performance, yet another week can go by.
On the other hand, in-office spore testing can offer an office a passing sterilizer test result in 24 hours; a failed result may appear even sooner. If a repeat test is necessary, a total of 48 hours will have elapsed versus 2 weeks for mail-in results.
(2) Is there a less costly way to do spore testing?
As to the question of a less costly option for spore testing, in-office spore testing can offer savings in a couple of ways. Offices with multiple sterilizers can benefit from the need for only one control vial while testing multiple sterilizers and secondly, there are no costs for postage.
