From time-to-time we receive calls from clients asking if there are alternatives to our mail-in spore testing service. Most inquiries are typically generated by one of two questions:
(1) Is there a way to get faster spore test results?
This question usually comes from an office that has recently failed a spore test. The result for a mailed-in spore test can take a number of days to report back to the office based on the various delivery times of the postal service. With spore tests coming in from all over the United States, it’s possible for a test result to take as many as 7 days. If the office follows up with another test to recheck their sterilizer’s performance, yet another week can go by.
On the other hand, in-office spore testing can offer an office a passing sterilizer test result in 24 hours; a failed result may appear even sooner. If a repeat test is necessary, a total of 48 hours will have elapsed versus 2 weeks for mail-in results.
(2) Is there a less costly way to do spore testing?
As to the question of a less costly option for spore testing, in-office spore testing can offer savings in a couple of ways. Offices with multiple sterilizers can benefit from the need for only one control vial while testing multiple sterilizers and secondly, there are no costs for postage.
Remember: when using in-office spore testing with our BiovewTM self-contained biological indicators there are no third party test results generated and you are responsible for monitoring your sterilization equipment and developing your own record keeping program, whereas using our Mesa Labs Mail-In Spore Testing our laboratory provides you with those results. There are advantages to both programs. The decision to choose mail-in or in-office spore testing services based on these two questions can be variable dependent on the individual situation and needs of the office. Mesa recommends reviewing and discussing which option is best for you.
